Citi Places RWE on Upside Catalyst Watch Ahead of Q2 Earnings

Summary
Citi analysts have initiated a 90-day upside Catalyst Watch for RWE, citing expectations for an upgraded earnings forecast and other positive developments, while maintaining a Neutral rating on the stock.
Analysts at Citi have placed German utility RWE (ETR:RWE) on a 90-day upside Catalyst Watch, signaling an expectation of positive near-term developments for the company's stock. Despite the optimistic short-term outlook, the bank maintained its Neutral rating and EUR60 per share price target.
Key Catalysts Identified
According to a note from the firm, the Catalyst Watch is driven by several anticipated events that could act as positive triggers for the stock. Citi highlighted three primary factors:
- An expected guidance increase when RWE reports its second-quarter 2026 results.
- Favorable outcomes from Germany's upcoming gas capacity auctions, scheduled for September and December, where RWE is bidding on approximately 3 gigawatts of capacity.
- Further disposals of data center sites, for which the company holds a portfolio of over 3 gigawatts of connection points.
Upgraded Financial Outlook
AdCiti is forecasting strong second-quarter performance for RWE, projecting an adjusted EBITDA of EUR1,138 million, which would represent a 37% increase year-over-year. The bank also expects adjusted net income to rise by 50% to EUR415 million.
The firm believes RWE is positioned to raise its full-year guidance. Citi forecasts 2026 EBITDA at EUR5.92 billion, which is above the current consensus estimate of EUR5.86 billion and the high end of RWE's official guidance of EUR5.2 billion to EUR5.8 billion. This anticipated upgrade is based on a EUR0.3 billion Eemshaven compensation payment booked in the first quarter and an additional EUR0.1 billion contribution from Amprion expected in the second half.
Market Context
Analysts also noted that higher commodity and power prices could provide additional tailwinds for RWE's power generation and trading divisions. While the Catalyst Watch points to potential short-term gains, the unchanged Neutral rating suggests that Citi's fundamental long-term view on the stock remains unchanged at its current valuation.
