Citi Forecasts USD/JPY to Hit 163 if Topix Index Rises to 4,500

The Japanese yen could weaken to approximately ¥163 per U.S. dollar if the country's Topix stock index rallies to the 4,500 mark, according to a research note from Citi released Thursday. The firm's analysis highlights the strong historical relationship between rising Japanese equity values and a depreciating yen.
Equity Rally's Impact on the Yen
Citi's model suggests that the current value of the Topix index implies a USD/JPY exchange rate of around ¥160. The Topix, which tracks all domestic companies on the Tokyo Stock Exchange’s Prime Market, serves as a broad gauge of the Japanese stock market.
Analysts at the firm noted that historically high levels for Japanese stocks have often triggered portfolio rebalancing and hedging activities from both domestic and international investors. These flows have tended to amplify downward pressure on the yen.
AdShifting Dynamics and Key Risks
However, Citi also observed that the tight correlation between Japanese equity strength and yen depreciation has loosened since 2024. This shift is attributed to two primary factors: the narrowing of the monetary policy gap between Japan and other major economies, and foreign exchange interventions by Japanese authorities to support the currency.
The firm cautioned that the current USD/JPY rate already anticipates some of the ongoing strength in Japanese equities. Investors should remain aware of potential risks that could drive further yen weakness, including a significant change in the interest rate spread or a shift in the government's currency intervention policy. Citi recommends continued caution on the currency pair.
