Cigna Projects $200 Million in Customer Savings Over Three Years With New AI Tools

Summary
The health insurer announced its artificial intelligence programs aim to reduce medical costs by proactively identifying and managing care for patients with chronic and complex conditions.
Health insurer Cigna (CI) announced on Thursday that it expects its new artificial intelligence tools to save customers $200 million in medical costs over the next three years. The technology is designed to proactively identify members with chronic or complex health conditions to facilitate earlier clinical intervention.
Proactive Care Strategy
Cigna's strategy involves using AI to connect at-risk members with the company's team of 1,250 clinicians, including nurses, for more personalized support. Bryan Holgerson, a president at Cigna Healthcare, stated the goal is to reduce the frequency of more expensive health events as costs for hospitalization and emergency services continue to climb.
In a press release, the company said the initiative will:
- Boost clinical access by 20% for individuals with conditions like cancer, heart disease, or kidney disease.
- Help identify breast, colorectal, and lung cancer at earlier stages.
AdAccording to a company spokesperson, Cigna's data indicates that customers who currently use its clinical programs save an average of $2,000 a year in medical expenses.
Industry-Wide AI Adoption
Cigna's announcement places it alongside industry rivals who are also integrating AI to improve efficiency and control costs. The move reflects a broader trend among health insurers to leverage technology for better patient outcomes and financial management.
Last week, competitor UnitedHealth Group (UNH) reported that its new AI tools have reduced the administrative workload for clinicians in its Optum health services unit. Similarly, CVS Health (CVS) recently announced plans to launch an AI-powered assistant to book medical appointments directly on behalf of its members.
