Background

Shares of Cerebras Systems (NYSE: CBRS) slid 4% on Wednesday after short seller Culper Research published a critical report questioning the durability and underlying technology of the AI chipmaker’s wafer-scale engines. Culper disclosed it holds a short position in the company, betting that its stock price will fall.

Core Allegations from Culper Research

The report's central thesis is that Cerebras's business model is fundamentally undermined by technological limitations. Culper alleges that the company's massive chips have a functional lifespan of just 1.5 to 2.5 years in the field due to rapid degradation.

Key claims in the report include:

  • Misleading Technology Claims: Culper challenges Cerebras's assertion that it invented a novel connector material to solve thermal expansion issues. The report alleges Cerebras uses PariPoser, a material developed in the 1980s and sold by Paricon Technologies, a claim Culper states Paricon confirmed.
  • Forced Continuous Operation: The short seller claims Cerebras programs its wafers to run constant "dummy operations" to prevent them from ever cooling down. Allowing the chips to cool could allegedly cause them to break.
  • Accelerated Degradation: This workaround of never allowing the hardware to cool causes the wafers to degrade quickly, leading to their short operational lifespan, according to the report.

Report Cites Technical Evidence

To support its claims, Culper pointed to a June 2026 event where a Cerebras solutions architect reportedly admitted that these "dummy operations" are necessary for the hardware to remain functional. The firm also stated that a decompilation of Cerebras’s client software revealed a field labeled "dummy tokens," which it notes is distinct from standard padding tokens and is not found in software from competitors like Nvidia, Google, or Intel.

These allegations stand in contrast to Cerebras's long-held public position that its wafer-scale integration is a breakthrough solution to the decades-old challenge of building, powering, and cooling a processor the size of an entire silicon wafer. Cerebras Systems has not yet issued a public response to the report.
