Bank of America to Expand Branch Network in Wisconsin, Alabama, and Louisiana

Bank of America announced plans on Wednesday to expand its physical retail footprint, opening dozens of new financial centers across Wisconsin, Alabama, and Louisiana. The move, reported by Reuters, is part of the bank's ongoing strategy to increase its presence in key growth markets across the United States.
Expansion Details
The multi-year expansion includes several specific regional targets as the bank continues to open approximately 50 branches per year nationwide. Key details of the plan include:
- Wisconsin: The bank plans to open 19 new branches by 2030, which is expected to create 130 new jobs in the state.
- Birmingham, Alabama: A total of 10 new branches are slated to open, with the first locations launching in the first quarter of 2027.
- Greater New Orleans, Louisiana: Expansion into this market is scheduled to begin in the second half of 2027.
Strategic Rationale
The expansion is a deliberate effort to reach a larger portion of the U.S. population in areas with strong economic indicators. "We continue to strategically enhance and expand our branch network, really trying to reach more of the US population," Holly O’Neill, president of the bank’s consumer, retail and preferred banking, told Reuters.
AdAccording to O'Neill, the bank selects new markets based on their "growth dynamics, their population, and our opportunity to grow the business." This strategy focuses on deploying capital and resources to areas where the bank sees significant potential for new customer acquisition and business growth.
Context and Market Position
This investment in physical locations comes as many financial institutions weigh digital-first strategies. For Bank of America, it builds upon a substantial existing network of 3,500 financial centers that already cover an estimated 83% of the U.S. population.
Since 2016, the company has invested over $5 billion in its branch network. The continued expansion signals a commitment to a hybrid model, combining digital convenience with the high-touch service of in-person banking, a strategy that could be crucial for capturing market share in new regions.
