Carlsberg Downgraded to Hold by Jefferies on China Competition, Growth Concerns

Jefferies downgraded Carlsberg A/S to Hold from a previous Buy rating on Monday, citing mounting concerns over the brewer's sales growth trajectory. The investment firm also reduced its price target on the stock to DKK 950 from DKK 1,100.
Headwinds in Key Markets
The downgrade is primarily driven by expectations of a slowdown in two key areas. Jefferies pointed to intensifying competition in China, a critical market that accounts for approximately 30% of Carlsberg’s total beer volumes. This competitive pressure is expected to temper the company's growth momentum.
Additionally, analysts noted the fading impact of a one-time sales boost from Kazakhstan. The firm's analysis suggests these factors will create a more challenging environment for Carlsberg to expand its top line.
AdGrowth Outlook Under Pressure
Jefferies projects that Carlsberg's underlying organic sales growth will be around 1.3% in 2026, when excluding the contribution from Kazakhstan. This forecast highlights a significant gap compared to the current consensus estimate of 3.5% growth for 2027, suggesting a substantial acceleration would be needed to meet market expectations.
According to the Jefferies note, this slower growth profile presents an "obstacle to the stock’s revaluation." It could also challenge Carlsberg's ability to meet its own medium-term organic growth target of 4% to 6%. Despite the sales concerns, the firm acknowledged that cost-reduction initiatives should help support profit growth, and described Carlsberg's strategic move into the soft drinks sector as a positive step.
