BTIG Downgrades Etsy to Neutral, Citing Balanced Risk-Reward After 55% Rally

Summary
Brokerage firm BTIG has lowered its rating on Etsy to Neutral from Buy, arguing that the stock's significant year-to-date gains have brought its valuation to a full level, balancing its risk-reward profile.
BTIG downgraded Etsy (ETSY) to Neutral from Buy on Thursday, citing the e-commerce company's significant stock rally this year which has pushed its valuation to a level the firm now considers balanced. The move prompted a 3.6% drop in Etsy's shares in premarket trading, according to the broker's report.
Valuation Concerns Drive Downgrade
The downgrade follows a 55% year-to-date surge in Etsy's stock, making it the top performer among the 24 e-commerce companies tracked by BTIG, which have seen an average decline of 6% in 2026. Shares closed Wednesday at $85.74, surpassing the firm's prior price target of $78.
In a note to clients, BTIG analyst Marvin Fong stated that while much of the recent strength is fundamentally driven, the stock's valuation is now full. The firm estimated that since its February low, Etsy's core business valuation has expanded from roughly 6 times 2027 adjusted EBITDA to approximately 11 times that same estimate. BTIG does not issue price targets for stocks with a Neutral rating.
Peer Comparison and Growth Outlook
BTIG's analysis suggests Etsy's valuation appears stretched relative to its growth prospects when compared to industry peers. The firm highlighted that consensus estimates project Etsy's gross merchandise volume (GMV) to grow at just a 3.6% compound annual rate through 2028.
AdFor context, BTIG made the following comparisons:
- Amazon (AMZN) trades at a similar 11 times forward EV/EBITDA multiple but is projected to grow revenue by 14% through 2028.
- eBay (EBAY), with its faster projected growth and less discretionary product mix, trades at 13 times forward EV/EBITDA, which BTIG views as a potential ceiling for Etsy.
Non-Fundamental Factors at Play
While acknowledging that solid quarter-to-date sales data has supported some of the stock's strength, BTIG attributed part of the outperformance to non-fundamental factors. The firm's note pointed to "short covering and rotation out of AI stocks" as contributing drivers to the rally.
Technical factors may also create headwinds. BTIG noted that Etsy's $650 million in 2030 convertible notes carry a conversion price of $85.79, which could create resistance near the stock's current levels.
