BlackBerry Beats Q2 Estimates and Raises Outlook, but Muted Stock Reaction Highlights Segment Concerns

Summary
BlackBerry Ltd. reported second-quarter earnings and revenue that surpassed analyst expectations and raised its full-year guidance, driven by a record performance in its QNX automotive software unit. However, a trimmed forecast for its Secure Communications division tempered investor enthusiasm.
BlackBerry Ltd. (NYSE: BB) reported stronger-than-expected financial results for the second quarter of fiscal year 2027 and raised its full-year outlook, citing momentum in its automotive and Internet of Things (IoT) software divisions. Despite the beat, the company's stock saw a muted response as investors weighed a guidance cut in its Secure Communications segment against the robust performance.
QNX Drives Quarterly Beat
BlackBerry announced significant outperformance against market expectations for the quarter, showcasing strong growth and profitability.
- Revenue: $163.3 million, an increase of 26% year-over-year and beating consensus estimates by over $20 million.
- Adjusted Earnings Per Share (EPS): $0.07, surpassing the expected $0.04.
- Adjusted EBITDA: $47 million, with a margin of 29%.
- GAAP Net Income: $34 million, marking the company's sixth consecutive quarter of positive GAAP net income.
The results were largely driven by the QNX division, which provides software for the automotive industry. QNX posted a record $80 million in quarterly revenue, a 27% year-over-year increase, as its previously announced $950 million royalty backlog began to convert into revenue. The company also announced its largest-ever design win, a deal with Coretura—a joint venture between Volvo Group and Daimler Truck—valued at over $100 million in future royalties for its Alloy Kore platform.
Guidance Raised Amid Mixed Signals
AdBuoyed by the strong quarter, BlackBerry raised its full-year guidance for the second consecutive quarter. The company now projects full-year revenue between $616 million and $636 million and adjusted EBITDA of $141 million to $158 million. Full-year operating cash flow guidance was also increased to approximately $115 million.
However, the outlook was not uniformly positive. Management trimmed the full-year guidance for its Secure Communications segment to a range of $260 million to $270 million, citing uncertainty over the timing of large U.S. federal government contracts amid what the source described as Canada-U.S. trade tensions. Furthermore, a $22 million beat in licensing revenue was attributed to a single new arrangement, with management cautioning investors to "not treat this as a new quarterly run rate."
Market Reaction and Outlook
The company’s stock gained just 1.79% in intraday trading following the announcement, a subdued reaction given the scale of the earnings beat. The market appeared to be balancing the strong performance of the core QNX business against the revised Secure Communications forecast and the one-time nature of the licensing revenue.
While new design wins with partners like Uber and the growing engagement around NVIDIA-based platforms point to long-term potential in AI and robotics, management noted that revenue from these initiatives is not yet material and will take time to develop. Investors will be closely watching for sustained growth in QNX royalties and clarity on the government contracts in the upcoming quarters.
