Darden Shares Dip as LongHorn Strength Is Offset by Olive Garden Slowdown

Summary
The restaurant operator beat industry benchmarks for same-store sales, driven by exceptional performance at LongHorn Steakhouse, but sluggish growth at its flagship Olive Garden brand and concerns over beef inflation weighed on the stock.
Darden Restaurants (NYSE: DRI) reported first-quarter fiscal 2027 results that surpassed casual dining industry benchmarks, but shares traded lower as investors focused on slowing growth at its flagship Olive Garden brand and upcoming cost pressures. The company's stock fell 1.4% to $210.73 in Thursday trading following the release.
A Tale of Two Brands
The report highlighted a significant performance gap between Darden's two largest chains. LongHorn Steakhouse was the clear standout, delivering an impressive +6.2% increase in same-restaurant sales, marking its 22nd consecutive quarter of positive growth. The steakhouse chain, which generated $860.9 million in quarterly sales, continues to be Darden's primary growth engine.
In contrast, Olive Garden posted same-restaurant sales growth of just +1.1%. While positive, this figure lagged the casual dining industry's average of +2.4%. As Darden's largest brand, accounting for approximately 42% of total revenue, Olive Garden's relative weakness tempered the portfolio's overall strength.
Guidance Reaffirmed Amid Inflation Concerns
AdDarden's management reaffirmed its full-year earnings per share (EPS) guidance for fiscal 2027, projecting a range of $11.10 to $11.35. The company's blended same-restaurant sales for the quarter rose +3.2%, outperforming the industry and signaling continued market share gains across its portfolio.
However, the company warned investors of a key headwind on the horizon. Management noted that commodity inflation, particularly for beef, is expected to be "front-weighted" in the fiscal year. This suggests a potential squeeze on profit margins during the first half of the year before cost pressures are expected to ease.
Market Outlook
The market's muted reaction reflects the dual narrative within the earnings report: solid overall execution overshadowed by concerns about a key brand and future costs. While LongHorn's sustained momentum provides a strong bull case, Olive Garden's deceleration and the looming threat of beef inflation present clear risks for the coming quarters.
