Bitcoin Surpasses $81,000 as Treasury Buybacks Fuel 'Currency Debasement' Fears

Bitcoin surged past $81,000 on Friday, climbing more than 28% in August for its strongest monthly performance since November 2024. The rally, which began from a low of around $64,000 early in the month, is being fueled by a U.S. Treasury policy shift that has reignited fears of currency debasement and sent investors flocking to digital and physical assets.
Treasury Action Sparks Rally
The primary catalyst for the recent price action was the U.S. Treasury's August 19 announcement that it would at least double the size of its long-term bond buybacks to $4 billion per operation. Markets widely interpreted the move as a form of monetary easing, weakening the U.S. dollar and sparking a so-called "currency debasement trade."
According to Stephen Coltman, a macro head at 21Shares, the Treasury's move sent a "shock" through the market, as investors worried that they would not be adequately compensated for inflation. This sentiment has benefited both Bitcoin and gold, which is up approximately 14% in August. The 90-day correlation between the two assets has reached its highest level since the pandemic, reinforcing Bitcoin's narrative as "digital gold."
Institutional Buying Sustains Momentum
While the rally was initially triggered by over $2.7 billion in short liquidations, it has since been sustained by strong institutional demand. Key indicators point to renewed interest from large-scale investors:
Ad- ETF Inflows: U.S.-based spot Bitcoin ETFs have attracted more than $2.6 billion in net inflows over the past eight trading sessions.
- Coinbase Premium: The price of Bitcoin on Coinbase, the largest U.S. crypto exchange, is again trading at a premium to its price on Binance for the first time in about three months. Lacie Zhang, an analyst at Bitget Wallet, stated this suggests a return of institutional capital allocation through U.S. platforms.
Market Outlook and Sentiment
Analysts are watching to see if the momentum can carry Bitcoin toward the psychological $100,000 level. "The U.S. Treasury's plan has prompted buyers to flock to physical and digital assets," said Tony Sycamore, a market analyst at IG, who sees a potential move toward a $95,000 to $100,000 target if the current breakout holds.
However, market sentiment has become highly optimistic, which can be a contrarian indicator. The Crypto Fear & Greed Index has returned to "Extreme Greed" for the first time since late 2024. Historically, prolonged periods at this level have signaled an increased risk of a short-term price correction.
