Barry Callebaut Shares Fall as Profit Concerns Eclipse Volume Growth

Shares in Barry Callebaut (SIX:BARN) fell sharply on Tuesday after the Swiss chocolate and cocoa producer's third-quarter trading update revealed that a long-awaited recovery in sales volume was not enough to allay market concerns over its profitability.
The stock traded down 4.1% to CHF 1,135 during the session, a company-specific decline that contrasted with the relatively stable performance of the broader Swiss Market Index (SMI).
Volume Rebounds, but Profit Outlook Weighs
Barry Callebaut reported a 5.7% increase in group sales volume for its third quarter, marking the first positive quarterly reading in more than two years. The company attributed the rebound to strong cocoa demand and improved service levels, particularly in North America.
Despite this positive operational signal, the company's financial outlook remained a significant drag on investor sentiment. Management left its full-year guidance for recurring earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT) unchanged, still projecting a mid-teens percentage decrease in local currencies. Investors had reportedly hoped for an upward revision following the volume recovery.
Revenue Declines on Lower Cocoa Prices
The company's nine-month financial figures highlighted persistent headwinds. Key results for the period include:
Ad- Sales volume declined by 2.8% to 1,557,239 tonnes.
- Sales revenue fell to CHF 9.56 billion from CHF 10.95 billion in the prior-year period.
The drop in revenue was primarily driven by a sharp 47% year-on-year decline in average terminal market cocoa prices, which directly impacts the company's pricing structure. In a slight improvement, Barry Callebaut did tighten its full-year volume guidance to an expected decline of approximately 1%, compared to a prior range of -1% to -3%.
Analyst View Reinforces Bearish Tone
Adding to the negative pressure, analysts at Deutsche Bank reiterated a bearish view on the company's near-term profitability. The bank maintained its Sell rating on Barry Callebaut stock and lowered its price target to CHF 960 from a previous CHF 1,000.
The combination of the unchanged and deeply negative EBIT outlook, falling revenue, and the analyst price target cut proved sufficient to overwhelm the positive news of a volume rebound, pushing the shares to their session low.
