Artiva Biotherapeutics Shares Nosedive After Scrapping Lead Drug, Cutting 94% of Staff

Shares of Artiva Biotherapeutics plummeted after the company announced it was permanently halting development of its only clinical-stage asset, AlloNK (AB-101), following serious safety issues and disappointing efficacy data. The company also initiated a drastic restructuring that includes cutting nearly its entire workforce.
Clinical Program Halted
Artiva's decision to discontinue its allogeneic NK cell therapy candidate was driven by a combination of safety and efficacy failures. The company reported two Grade 5 safety events, meaning patient deaths, during its clinical evaluation of AlloNK for autoimmune diseases.
- One death was due to fatal leukoencephalopathy, which was assessed as likely linked to fludarabine-associated neurotoxicity, a component of the treatment regimen.
- A second death was assessed as unrelated to the study treatment.
Furthermore, updated long-term follow-up data revealed that the durability of the clinical response did not meet the company's pre-defined threshold. Artiva concluded the results were insufficient to support continued development or the planned initiation of a Phase 3 pivotal trial.
Drastic Restructuring and Strategic Review
AdIn response to the clinical failure, Artiva is implementing a sweeping strategic overhaul. The company announced it is reducing its workforce by approximately 94% and has engaged Leerink Partners as a financial advisor to explore strategic alternatives.
Potential outcomes for the company include a merger, sale of assets, licensing arrangements, or a complete dissolution and liquidation. In a sign of the abrupt halt, Artiva has canceled its upcoming investor webcast scheduled for November 9 and withdrawn its data presentation from the ACR Convergence 2026 conference.
Market Impact and Financial Position
The market reacted severely to the news, with Artiva's stock falling 30.0% in pre-open trading on Tuesday. The selloff is entirely company-specific, occurring while broader market indices like the S&P 500 posted modest gains.
With its clinical pipeline now empty, investors are re-evaluating the company based on its remaining assets rather than future prospects. Artiva reported a cash position of approximately $319.1 million as of September 30. The stock is now being repriced around its potential liquidation value, trading at $4.31 per share, a fraction of its 52-week high of $14.53.
