Background

Artiva Biotherapeutics (NASDAQ: ARTV) announced Tuesday it is halting the development of its experimental cell therapy, AlloNK, following two patient deaths in a mid-stage trial. The company will cut approximately 94% of its workforce and begin exploring strategic alternatives, sending its shares down 30% in premarket trading.

Trial Discontinued After Fatal Events

The decision to stop the program follows two patient deaths during a trial testing AlloNK as a potential treatment for autoimmune conditions, including rheumatoid arthritis. Artiva provided details on both incidents:

  • One patient died from a neurological event after receiving treatment. The company stated that both the investigator and an independent safety review determined the event was likely related to complications from fludarabine, a chemotherapy drug used in the treatment regimen.
  • A second patient died suddenly about two months after starting treatment. According to Artiva, an investigator assessed this death as being unrelated to the AlloNK therapy.

Corporate Restructuring and Market Reaction

The clinical setback prompted a drastic corporate overhaul. In addition to the massive workforce reduction, Artiva is now pursuing "strategic alternatives," a term that often signals a company may be seeking a merger, sale, or liquidation of its assets.

"After careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to discontinue development of AlloNK and to pursue strategic alternatives," CEO Fred Aslan said in the company's announcement. The news was met with a sharp sell-off from investors, reflecting the significant impact of the trial's failure on the company's future prospects.
