Background

Moody's Ratings affirmed AngloGold Ashanti's (NYSE:AU) Baa3 long-term issuer rating and upgraded its outlook to positive from stable on Tuesday, signaling a potential for a future rating upgrade. The ratings agency pointed to the company's robust credit metrics, conservative financial policy, and a strategic shift toward lower-risk mining jurisdictions as key drivers for the change.

Rationale for the Outlook Change

The revision reflects AngloGold Ashanti's improved financial position and strategic execution. Moody's highlighted the company's very strong credit metrics, including a substantial reduction in leverage and a strong liquidity profile.

  • As of June 30, 2026, Moody's-adjusted gross leverage fell to 0.2x gross debt/EBITDA, down from 0.4x at the end of 2025.
  • The company maintained a net cash position.
  • Retained cash flow to debt increased significantly to 157% from 124% over the same period.

The ratings agency also noted the company's long-term strategy of diversifying its geographical footprint away from high-risk areas. This includes developing large, early-stage greenfield projects in Nevada and Colombia, which Moody's views as a positive step in de-risking its asset portfolio.

Balancing Strengths and Risks

While the outlook is positive, Moody's noted that the Baa3 rating continues to be constrained by several factors. These include AngloGold Ashanti's exposure to the price volatility of a single commodity, gold, and its relatively high operating costs when compared to many of its investment-grade peers.

The company also retains exposure to macroeconomic, political, and regulatory risks in some of the lower-rated sovereign jurisdictions where it currently generates a majority of its EBITDA. The affirmation also applies to approximately $1.1 billion in backed senior unsecured notes issued by its subsidiary, AngloGold Ashanti Holdings plc.

Path to a Potential Upgrade

The positive outlook indicates that a rating upgrade is possible over the next 12 to 18 months if current trends continue. Moody's projects that under a baseline gold price scenario of $3,400 per ounce in 2027, AngloGold's gross leverage will remain below 0.5x and its retained cash flow to debt will stay above 130%.

An upgrade could be triggered if the company sustainably maintains gross debt to EBITDA solidly below 2.5x, keeps retained cash flow to gross debt above 40%, and continues to generate positive free cash flow after dividends, according to the agency.
