American Eagle Stock Tumbles as Flat Margin Outlook Weighs on Results

Shares of American Eagle Outfitters (NYSE: AEO) slumped more than 11% in premarket trading Thursday after the apparel retailer's disappointing gross-margin forecast overshadowed a second-quarter revenue beat. The guidance highlighted persistent profitability pressures and weakness in the company's core brand, signaling to investors that a recovery may face significant headwinds.
Guidance and Inventory Concerns
While second-quarter revenue surpassed analyst estimates, the company's forward-looking statements tempered optimism. American Eagle projected that its gross margin for the current quarter would be flat compared to the previous year. The retailer also reported that inventory costs for the quarter ending August 1 rose 14% from a year earlier, a figure that includes costs from incremental tariffs.
In a statement on Wednesday, company executives said they were still working to clear older inventory through discounts after a "sharp shift in fashion trends" left some merchandise misaligned with consumer tastes. Analysts at Morgan Stanley noted that these elevated inventory levels represent a key overhang for the stock, stating that the company's "earnings power is unlikely to improve."
Brand Performance and Market Context
AdThe retailer's results revealed a continued divergence between its brands. Growth at Aerie, its women's intimates and activewear line, was strong enough to offset the softness at the flagship American Eagle brand, driving the overall revenue beat. However, the core brand's struggles remain a central concern for investors.
American Eagle's challenges come amid a difficult environment for the broader apparel sector, as high inflation forces consumers to prioritize essential spending and seek out promotions. The company's stock has declined approximately 36% this year, reflecting these pressures. In response, the retailer has employed strategies like celebrity partnerships, including a campaign with actor Sydney Sweeney, to attract higher-income Gen Z shoppers.
- Stock Performance: Down over 11% in premarket trading.
- Inventory Costs: Increased 14% year-over-year in Q2.
- Forward P/E Multiple: 9.38, compared to peers Abercrombie & Fitch (11.47) and Gap (8.91).
