AI and Electrification to Drive $3.6 Trillion Annual Energy Investment, Barclays Says

The global energy sector could require $3.6 trillion in annual investment by 2027 as surging demand outpaces the development of supply and infrastructure, according to a new analysis from Barclays. The bank's analysts identified artificial intelligence, widespread electrification, and energy security as the primary drivers of this trend, positioning the sector as one of the largest capital allocation opportunities of the next decade.
A New Era of 'Energy Addition'
Barclays projects that the global economy is entering a period of "energy addition," where demand for both conventional and low-carbon energy sources will rise in tandem, rather than renewables simply replacing fossil fuels. Global energy demand is forecast to grow at a 1.9% compound annual rate from 2025 through 2050.
The rapid expansion of AI is a significant factor, with data centers placing intense pressure on power systems. According to the report:
- Global data center electricity consumption is forecast to reach 565 terawatt-hours in 2026, a 26% increase from 2025.
- By 2040, data centers alone could add about 32 quadrillion BTUs of energy demand, an amount roughly equivalent to Russia’s total energy consumption in 2025.
Supply Bottlenecks from Underinvestment
AdYears of underinvestment have created significant constraints on the energy supply chain, according to Barclays. Global upstream oil and gas capital expenditure remains approximately 45% below its peak, limiting production growth.
Simultaneously, infrastructure is struggling to keep pace with the energy transition. More than 2,500 gigawatts of renewable, storage, and other large-load projects are currently waiting for grid connections worldwide. This backlog makes electricity grids, transformers, and transmission networks major bottlenecks for both AI expansion and broader electrification efforts.
Market and Investment Outlook
Barclays identifies broad investment opportunities across the energy value chain, including upstream producers, oilfield services, LNG, pipelines, utilities, and clean technology. The analysts noted that companies with strong balance sheets, strategic assets, and reliable access to capital are particularly well-positioned to benefit.
Reflecting this outlook, Barclays stated that its 2028 earnings estimates for its preferred energy stocks are, on average, 11% above consensus forecasts. The bank’s price targets for these stocks imply a potential upside of approximately 30%.
