Agios Pharmaceuticals Gains Analyst Favor After FDA Grants Priority Review for Sickle Cell Drug

Agios Pharmaceuticals has been identified as a top pick in the biotechnology sector by investment firm TD Cowen, driven by recent regulatory progress for its drug candidate, mitapivat. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has accepted the company's supplemental New Drug Application for mitapivat as a treatment for sickle cell disease and has granted it a priority review, setting a Prescription Drug User Fee Act (PDUFA) target date of November 1, 2026.
According to TD Cowen's analysis, the priority review designation is a positive signal of regulatory alignment for the drug's approval. This development counters previous skepticism from some market observers who had questioned the drug's approvability. The firm also noted that there is currently no indication that an FDA Advisory Committee meeting will be required, which is often seen as a favorable sign for a straightforward approval process.
The FDA's decision is notable in the context of the competitive landscape. In April, competitor Novo Nordisk released positive clinical findings for its own sickle cell disease treatment, etavopivat. TD Cowen suggests that the priority review for mitapivat could provide Agios with a crucial head start in the market before a potential launch by Novo Nordisk.
AdAnalysts believe that even a modest share of the sickle cell disease market, which they estimate to be a multi-billion dollar opportunity, could be significant for Agios, particularly as investor expectations have been low. The firm also pointed out that any sales from this new indication would likely be highly profitable due to an existing marketing overlap with mitapivat's currently approved uses. In other recent company news, Agios licensed global rights to the drug cevidoplenib from Oscotec and discontinued the development of another drug, tebapivat.
