Strong August Jobs Data Unlikely to Alter Fed's September Rate Decision, Evercore Says

The U.S. labor market posted surprisingly strong gains in August, but the data is not expected to be a "gamechanger" for the Federal Reserve's upcoming interest rate decision, according to analysis from Evercore. The report reinforces the economy's resilience but shifts the focus squarely to forthcoming inflation data as the key driver for the central bank's September meeting.
August Jobs Report Exceeds Expectations
U.S. nonfarm payrolls increased by 162,000 in August, marking a significant rebound from the previous month and surpassing analyst expectations. However, the unemployment rate rose by 5 basis points to 4.14% as more people entered the workforce.
Key figures from the report include:
- Labor force participation rate: Climbed 0.2 percentage points to 61.6%.
- Key sector growth: Leisure and hospitality added 62,000 jobs, while local government education contributed 42,000.
- Revisions: Upward revisions to June and July data lifted the three-month average payroll growth to 71,000 from a previous 20,000.
Separately, Goldman Sachs calculated that the underlying pace of job growth, based on both the payroll and household surveys, has accelerated to 53,000 from 5,000 prior to the report.
Inflation Data Remains the Deciding Factor
AdAccording to Evercore, while the robust payroll figures bolster confidence that the labor market can withstand a potential rate hike, they are not sufficient to force the Fed's hand in September. "Next week’s inflation data will still drive the hold vs hike decision," the firm stated.
Evercore suggested that the labor market's strength could act as a tie-breaker if the inflation report is ambiguous. The firm noted that if inflation data "breaks right on the cusp of the hold / hike divide," the strong jobs report could tip the scales toward a hike.
Outlook for Future Fed Policy
The primary influence of sustained employment strength is more likely to be felt in later Federal Reserve meetings. Evercore posited that the labor market's performance would "more plausibly exercise a stronger influence on Fed policy setting on a December-type horizon."
Friday's report was a key release in a week heavy with labor market indicators, following JOLTS job openings data on Tuesday and the ADP private employment report on Wednesday. Investors will now turn their attention to the upcoming inflation figures for the final major data point before the Fed's next policy announcement.
