Spot Bitcoin ETFs Snap 7-Day Inflow Streak Amid Renewed Fed Rate Hike Fears

A seven-day streak of positive inflows for U.S. spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) was abruptly halted late last week, as investor concerns over potential Federal Reserve interest rate hikes outweighed optimism around crypto-focused legislation. The reversal highlights the asset's vulnerability to macroeconomic pressures and challenges the narrative of Bitcoin as a standalone "digital gold."
Outflows Resume After Brief Respite
According to market data, spot Bitcoin ETFs experienced combined net outflows of more than $465 million on July 23 and 24. The withdrawals were significant enough to end the recent positive trend, which had been a welcome sign for investors after a prolonged period of selling.
- The two-day outflow broke a seven-consecutive-day period of net inflows.
- Despite the late-week reversal, the funds still recorded a weekly net inflow of $33.8 million, marking the third consecutive week of positive flows.
- This recent recovery followed a difficult period of eight straight weeks of outflows, which saw investors pull a cumulative $8.3 billion from the products.
BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) was reportedly a leading contributor to the recent outflows, signaling that even institutional investors remain cautious and may quickly reduce exposure when market sentiment sours.
Macro Headwinds Overshadow Regulation
The primary driver for the renewed selling pressure appears to be mounting anxiety that the Federal Reserve may resume interest rate hikes to combat persistent inflation, especially amid geopolitical tensions in the Middle East affecting oil prices. As a non-yielding asset, Bitcoin's appeal diminishes when interest rates on government bonds and other safer investments rise, increasing the opportunity cost of holding the cryptocurrency.
Ad"We expect macro-driven uncertainty to persist this week," said Ivan Lim, a senior derivatives trader at FalconX. He attributed the ETF outflows and fragile sentiment to "the legislative waiting period for the CLARITY Act and a rapid escalation in Fed rate hike expectations."
The potential for new U.S. crypto regulation, specifically the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act (CLARITY Act), has been a source of long-term optimism. However, its progress has been slow and is currently overshadowed by more immediate economic concerns.
Correlation with Risk Assets Continues
Bitcoin's price action continues to show a strong correlation with other high-risk assets, particularly technology stocks. The Nasdaq and Philadelphia Semiconductor Index both faced pressure last week, and as institutional investors de-risk their portfolios by selling tech shares, they often reduce their crypto allocations in tandem.
Adding to market concerns is a narrative shift around MicroStrategy, a major corporate holder of Bitcoin. The company's recent sales of the asset to cover expenses have altered its perception from a "permanent buyer" to a potential seller, introducing a new source of potential supply pressure.
"The next few trading days will be key," said Rachael Lucas, an analyst at BTC Markets. "If flows stabilize, it suggests a temporary pause driven by geopolitical events. A second consecutive week of significant outflows would be much more serious."
