Background

A significant valuation gap has opened between e-commerce platform providers Shopify (SHOP) and Wix.com (WIX), with an analysis showing investors are awarding a steep premium for Shopify's robust growth trajectory. The market is pricing Wix at a deep discount, reflecting its slower growth and recent stock performance.

A Tale of Two Valuations

According to an analysis by Investing.com on October 26, the contrast in key financial metrics highlights the market's divergent views on the two companies. Shopify's valuation reflects high expectations, while Wix appears to be priced for value.

  • Forward P/E (FY2026): Shopify trades at 88.8x forward earnings, compared to Wix at just 14.2x.
  • Free Cash Flow (FCF) Yield: Shopify offers an FCF yield of 1.1%, while Wix provides a much higher yield of 12.3% as of June 30, 2026.
  • Market Capitalization: The size difference is also immense, with Shopify valued at $217.03 billion versus Wix's $3.43 billion.

Growth Commands a Premium

The primary driver behind this valuation disparity is the difference in revenue growth. Shopify's revenue expanded from $4.61 billion in 2021 to a projected $11.56 billion in 2025. Over the same period, Wix's revenue grew from $1.27 billion to $1.99 billion.

Looking ahead, Shopify is projected to achieve revenue growth of 30.1% in fiscal 2025, more than double Wix's expected 13.2%. This has led to a situation where Shopify's future growth appears to be fully priced into its stock, with the source's fair value model suggesting a potential downside of nearly 15%. Conversely, Wix's higher gross margin (66.6% vs. Shopify's 47.8%) and strong FCF yield suggest its discount may be overdone, despite a 41.8% stock price decline over the past year.

Pairs Trade Dynamics

This valuation difference has drawn attention to a potential pairs trade, which involves taking a long position in the relatively inexpensive asset (Wix) and a short position in the expensive one (Shopify). The analysis notes this spread has paid off recently, with Wix's 56.9% gain over three months outpacing Shopify's 48.3% rise.

However, the analysis cautions that such a strategy carries risks. The valuation gap could persist, as expensive momentum stocks can continue to rally. The vast difference in company size and growth profiles may also prevent their valuations from converging. Upcoming earnings reports for both companies are viewed as the most likely catalysts to influence the spread.
