Record Diesel Prices Could Pave 'Golden Runway' for Tesla Semi, Morgan Stanley Says

Soaring diesel costs, which have surpassed $6 per gallon nationally for the first time, are intensifying pressure on the U.S. freight industry while potentially accelerating the shift toward electric and autonomous trucking, according to a new analysis from Morgan Stanley. The bank highlights the Tesla (TSLA) Semi as a prime beneficiary, arguing that its combination of electrification and self-driving capabilities could fundamentally reshape the sector's profitability.
A Squeeze on Traditional Trucking
According to the latest data from the American Automobile Association (AAA) cited in the report, the national average for a gallon of diesel fuel has reached $6.0556, with prices in California hitting as high as $7.9827. AAA noted that these prices represent a roughly 63% increase in fueling costs for truckers compared to the same period last year.
The financial strain is already visible in the market. The SPDR S&P Transportation ETF (XTN) has fallen approximately 7% over the past month. Shares of major trucking companies such as XPO, Inc. (XPO) and Old Dominion Freight Line (ODFL) have seen declines of over 10%. GasBuddy analyst Patrick De Haan warned that "record diesel prices will likely reignite inflation across the entire supply chain," making every shipment and delivery more expensive.
The Autonomous Advantage
Morgan Stanley analyst Andrew Percoco argues that the Tesla Semi's value proposition extends far beyond just fuel savings. The firm's analysis presents a compelling cost model comparing a human-operated electric truck with a fully autonomous one.
Ad- Cost Per Mile: An autonomous Semi could operate at $2.13 per mile, a 20% reduction from the $2.67 per mile for a human-driven electric truck. The model assumes the complete elimination of labor costs, which account for $1.21 per mile.
- Asset Utilization: An autonomous truck could operate up to 22 hours a day, achieving an annual mileage of 215,210 miles. This is a 2.33x increase over a human-driven truck, which is limited by regulations to about 11 hours of driving and covers roughly 92,400 miles annually.
- Profitability: These efficiencies could boost the annual profit per truck from $37,000 (11% margin) to $202,000 (29% margin).
Morgan Stanley projects that Tesla could charge a software subscription fee of $0.85 to $1.00 per mile for autonomous capabilities. This could generate $12,000 to $18,000 in high-margin recurring revenue per truck each month, dwarfing the roughly $100 monthly FSD subscription for its consumer vehicles.
Valuation Impact and Industry Outlook
Based on this opportunity, Morgan Stanley has raised its bull-case valuation for Tesla's network services business by $20, lifting its overall bull-case price target on TSLA to $840 from $820. The firm values the Semi opportunity alone at approximately $20 per share, or an $80 billion market capitalization, while maintaining a base-case target of $400 with an "Equal-weight" rating.
The report also serves as a warning for incumbent freight operators, including Knight-Swift (KNX), J.B. Hunt (JBHT), and Werner Enterprises (WERN). Morgan Stanley notes that while the transition presents an opportunity, it also poses a significant risk of disruption to business models that remain dependent on human drivers and diesel fuel. The U.S. autonomous trucking market is projected to reach $601 billion by 2026 and exceed $1 trillion by 2041.
