Oracle Beats Earnings on Surging AI Demand, But Cash Flow Concerns Linger

Oracle announced fiscal first-quarter 2027 earnings that surpassed analyst expectations, fueled by a massive surge in demand for its artificial intelligence and cloud services. The results confirmed the strength of the company's AI strategy, but also highlighted the significant capital investment required to support its growth, leaving questions about future profitability.
AI Demand Fuels Record Backlog
For the quarter, Oracle reported revenue of $19.30 billion and adjusted earnings per share of $1.92, beating consensus estimates of $19.13 billion and $1.73, respectively. The standout performer was Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI), which saw revenue climb 121% year-over-year to $7.4 billion.
The company's Remaining Performance Obligations (RPO), a measure of future contracted revenue, swelled to $664 billion. This was boosted by over $30 billion in new AI contracts signed during the quarter, providing a decisive answer to investor questions about whether AI-related demand was translating into tangible business.
Spotlight Shifts to Spending and Cash Flow
Despite the strong top-line growth, Oracle's financial execution remains under scrutiny. The company posted a negative free cash flow of $5 billion for the quarter, even as operating cash flow reached a record $23 billion. Management reiterated its fiscal 2027 capital expenditure guidance of $90 billion to $95 billion to build out its data center capacity.
AdWhile Oracle is using customer prepayments and supplier financing to mitigate the immediate cash burden, the heavy spending has delayed profitability. The company did not provide a specific timeline for when it expects to achieve positive free cash flow, a key metric for investors.
Future Catalysts and Margin Outlook
Oracle's non-GAAP operating margin remained resilient at approximately 42%, though management anticipates pressure on gross margins throughout fiscal 2027 as it ramps up its infrastructure. Investors will be watching several upcoming events for clarity on the company's long-term financial model.
Key catalysts include:
- October Investor Day: Expected to provide details on long-term CapEx, margin targets, and the path to positive free cash flow.
- AI World: The company plans to unveil a new AI accelerator product.
- Q2 2027 Earnings: Scheduled for December 14, 2026, this report will be the next test of the company's ability to convert its backlog into revenue.
