Microsoft Stock Valuation 'Highly Attractive' Ahead of Earnings, Morgan Stanley Says

Analysts at Morgan Stanley have reiterated a positive outlook on Microsoft (MSFT), describing the stock's risk/reward profile as "highly attractive" ahead of the company's fourth-quarter fiscal 2026 earnings report. The bank maintained its $600 price target, which implies a potential upside of approximately 54% from current trading levels.
Microsoft is scheduled to release its financial results on Wednesday, July 29, after the market closes. Morgan Stanley's confidence is built on expectations of robust cloud growth, accelerating AI product adoption, and disciplined cost management.
Key Metrics to Watch
Morgan Stanley anticipates several key performance indicators will reinforce Microsoft's growth trajectory. The bank is confident that the company will report 41% constant-currency growth for its Azure cloud platform in the fourth quarter, slightly ahead of the consensus estimate of 40.5%.
In a note to clients, analysts led by Adam Wood stated that a one-point beat versus Azure guidance would likely satisfy investors. They also highlighted the monetization of Microsoft's Copilot AI assistant as a critical theme, noting that potential upside could be driven by more than 6 million new Copilot seat additions during the quarter.
Azure and Copilot Momentum
AdThe bank's optimism regarding Azure is supported by what it called "strong channel checks, improving GPU capacity and positive CIO survey data." A recent Morgan Stanley survey of Chief Information Officers found that Microsoft has the highest forward software spending expectations among all vendors at 7.6%, with 72% of respondents expecting to increase their spending on Microsoft solutions over the next year.
Analysts also see Copilot's revenue contribution evolving into a "three-headed growth driver" through seat adoption, customer migration to higher-value tiers, and consumption-based AI services. A recent M365 price increase is also seen as a significant tailwind, estimated to contribute an incremental $2 billion in revenue in fiscal 2027.
Valuation and Capital Spending
Morgan Stanley argued that Microsoft's current valuation, trading at roughly 16 times its fiscal 2028 GAAP earnings per share, fails to reflect the company's durable growth profile. This perceived disconnect underscores the attractive investment case, according to the bank.
On the capital expenditure front, the analysts believe consensus estimates for Microsoft's spending remain conservative. They pointed to CFO Amy Hood's guidance for approximately $190 billion in total capital expenditures for calendar 2026 as the company continues its aggressive AI infrastructure buildout.
