K+S Shares Rise Over 4% on BNP Paribas Upgrade, Citing Stronger Agricultural Outlook

Summary
German potash producer K+S saw its stock jump after BNP Paribas upgraded its rating to 'outperform,' citing improving agricultural fundamentals and potential for higher fertilizer prices.
Shares in K+S AG (SDFGn) jumped more than 4% on Tuesday after analysts at BNP Paribas upgraded the German potash producer to "outperform" from a previous "underperform" rating, pointing to a strengthening outlook for agricultural markets.
Analyst's Rationale
BNP Paribas raised its price target for K+S to €19, which implies a potential upside of 32% from the stock's closing price on July 27, according to the bank's research note. The firm's analyst, David Symonds, stated that the bank has turned "more constructive on fertilizers as ag indicators continue to flash green."
The upgrade is partly based on a scenario forecasting $6 corn prices. BNP Paribas attributes this to its modeling of U.S. corn belt soil conditions, which it believes could present a downside risk to crop yields. This, in turn, would support higher grain prices, compounding existing shortages linked to the European heatwave and the Black Sea conflict.
Forecasts and Peer Comparison
AdBNP Paribas noted that the fertilizer sector had experienced a sell-off even as agricultural fundamentals improved, creating an investment opportunity. The bank's new potash and phosphate price estimates position its fiscal year 2027 EBITDA forecast for K+S 31% ahead of the market consensus.
In its sector-wide review, BNP Paribas also made the following rating changes:
- Nutrien (NTR): Upgraded to "outperform" from "neutral" with an $80 price target.
- Yara (YAR): Maintained an "underperform" rating with a NOK 390 price target.
- CF Industries (CF): Maintained a "neutral" rating but raised its price target to $130 from $120.
