Background

Shares of French pharmaceutical company Ipsen (IPN) fell nearly 7% in Monday trading following the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's approval of a generic competitor to its top-selling drug, Somatuline. Amneal Pharmaceuticals announced it would launch its generic version immediately, introducing significant competition for one of Ipsen's primary revenue sources.

FDA Greenlights Generic Rival

The FDA on Friday approved Amneal's lanreotide injection (120 mg/0.5 mL), a generic equivalent to Ipsen's Somatuline Depot, according to a statement from the New Jersey-based drugmaker. The product, which is supplied in a pre-filled syringe, received a Competitive Generic Therapy designation from the agency.

Lanreotide is a crucial treatment for several conditions, including the hormonal disorder acromegaly and certain types of tumors, such as advanced gastroenteropancreatic neuroendocrine tumors and carcinoid syndrome.

Impact on Ipsen's Revenue

The market reaction reflects the strategic importance of Somatuline to Ipsen's financial performance. The drug is a blockbuster product for the company, generating approximately 30% of its total revenue in the first half of 2026.

The introduction of a lower-priced generic alternative is expected to erode the market share and pricing power of the brand-name drug. According to data from IQVIA, U.S. sales for Somatuline totaled $983 million for the 12-month period ending in July 2026, highlighting the substantial market that Amneal is now positioned to enter.
