Gold Prices Decline as Surging Oil and Treasury Yields Solidify Fed Rate Hike Expectations

Summary

Gold prices edged lower as investors braced for a key Federal Reserve policy decision, with persistently high oil prices and a multi-year peak in U.S. Treasury yields strengthening bets on another interest rate increase.

Background

Gold prices fell on Wednesday, pressured by a sharp rise in U.S. Treasury yields and elevated oil prices that have reinforced inflation concerns ahead of a highly anticipated Federal Reserve policy announcement.

Market Pressures Mount

The precious metal has faced headwinds as investors recalibrate their expectations for monetary policy. According to Investing.com, spot gold (XAU/USD) edged down 0.3%, while gold futures also declined 0.3%. Other precious metals followed, with spot silver slipping 0.2% and platinum falling 0.5%.

The key drivers behind the weakness in bullion include:

  • Surging Bond Yields: The 10-year U.S. Treasury yield briefly touched 5.04%, its highest level since 2007. Higher yields increase the opportunity cost of holding non-yielding assets like gold, making interest-bearing government bonds more attractive to investors.
  • Elevated Oil Prices: Crude oil prices, which have risen for two consecutive sessions, are fueling concerns that inflation could remain stubbornly high. Uncertainty over the duration of a shutdown of Saudi Arabia's East-West pipeline has added to supply-side risks in the energy market.

Federal Reserve Decision in Focus

Markets are overwhelmingly positioned for a hawkish stance from the U.S. central bank. Citing market data, Investing.com reported that traders are pricing in a roughly 92% probability of a Fed rate hike later today.

A rate increase would likely put further downward pressure on gold, which typically has an inverse relationship with interest rates and the U.S. dollar. The U.S. Dollar Index saw a marginal gain of 0.1% to 99.73, adding to the pressure on dollar-denominated commodities.

Technical Outlook

According to Tony Sycamore, a senior market analyst at IG, gold is being weighed down by the combined forces of higher energy prices, rising bond yields, and a stronger dollar ahead of the Fed's decision. Sycamore noted that the metal needs to reclaim its 200-day moving average to signal that its recent pullback is complete.

Until that occurs, the analyst sees the potential for a deeper decline toward the next major support level. Despite the recent weakness, which has seen gold fall more than 3% in September, the metal remains well above its summer lows as some investors maintain long-term positions for portfolio hedging.
