German Bund Yield Nears 15-Year High as Oil Prices Fuel ECB Rate Hike Bets

Background

Eurozone government bond yields pushed higher on Tuesday, with Germany's benchmark borrowing costs hovering near multi-year highs as soaring crude oil prices reinforced market expectations for an imminent interest rate hike from the European Central Bank (ECB).

Yields React to Inflationary Pressures

The upward pressure on fixed-income markets was evident across the German yield curve. The benchmark 10-year Bund yield held firm at 3.382%, remaining near its highest level in 15 years. Meanwhile, the policy-sensitive two-year Schatz yield, which is more directly influenced by ECB rate expectations, edged up to 2.984%.

The moves reflect growing investor concern over persistent inflation, fueled by a severe energy shock, ahead of the ECB's Governing Council meeting scheduled for this Thursday.

Soaring Oil Prices Cement Hawkish Outlook

A primary driver for the sell-off in bonds is the surge in energy costs. Brent crude futures advanced toward $98 a barrel, rapidly approaching the psychological milestone of $100 following reports of threats from Tehran to Persian Gulf energy infrastructure.

For markets, oil prices in the triple digits raise the risk of cost-push stagflation—a scenario of slowing economic growth combined with high inflation. This dynamic would likely force the ECB to maintain a restrictive monetary policy stance. The concern is supported by preliminary August data showing Eurozone headline inflation accelerated to 3.3% year-on-year, driven by a 14.3% jump in energy prices.

U.S. Inflation Data Looms

Beyond the ECB's immediate decision, global bond markets are looking ahead to Friday's U.S. Consumer Price Index (CPI) report for further direction. The data follows last week's unexpectedly strong U.S. nonfarm payrolls report, which showed the economy added 162,000 jobs.

A high U.S. inflation reading would solidify expectations for a Federal Reserve rate hike at its September meeting. Such a move would likely exert further upward pressure on global sovereign yields, compounding the hawkish sentiment in European markets.
