Fortum Shares Fall as Lowered Nuclear Output Guidance Overshadows Profit Beat

Fortum Oyj (FORTUM) shares fell on Wednesday after the Finnish energy utility lowered its full-year nuclear generation guidance, a move that overshadowed a rise in quarterly profit and a historic power agreement with Google. The negative outlook prompted investors to focus on operational headwinds rather than the improved headline earnings.
Guidance Cut Triggers Sell-Off
The company's stock dropped 3.2% to €22.85 following the release of its January–September 2026 interim report. While the report showed a 5% year-on-year increase in third-quarter comparable operating profit to €102 million, supported by higher nuclear generation volumes, other details disappointed the market.
Key points from the release that concerned investors included:
- Reduced Nuclear Forecast: The full-year 2026 nuclear generation guidance was trimmed to a range of 23 TWh to 23.5 TWh, down from a previous outlook of up to 24 TWh.
- Lower Achieved Prices: The average achieved power price fell to €45.5 per megawatt-hour in the quarter.
These factors eclipsed positive news, including a landmark 22-year nuclear power purchase agreement with Google starting in 2028, which Fortum described as the largest sales agreement in its history.
Analyst Expectations and Market Context
AdThe earnings report landed amid existing analyst skepticism. In mid-October, OP Corporate Bank had raised its rating on Fortum to "Reduce," a sell-equivalent, with a price target of €20. The report fell short of expectations that hinged on the company meeting its previous nuclear production target and achieving a significant optimization premium.
The stock's decline also occurred against a backdrop of broader weakness in the European utility sector, which has faced pressure from softening power prices. Fortum is a component of the OMX Helsinki 25 index, which also faced headwinds during the session.
Strategic Moves and Outlook
Alongside its earnings, Fortum announced the completion of its acquisition of a 91.92% stake in Norwegian electricity retailer Elmera. While this deal expands the company's Nordic consumer platform, it also introduces integration costs that some investors may view cautiously in the near term.
Following the report, investor focus has shifted squarely to operational execution. Fortum's ability to meet its revised nuclear output guidance is now seen as the key variable for its financial performance in the coming quarters, even if spot electricity prices remain stable.
