Fitch Revises Moody's Outlook to Positive on Strong Cash Flow, Diversification

Fitch Ratings has revised its outlook on Moody’s Corporation (NYSE:MCO) to Positive from Stable, signaling confidence in the company's financial trajectory and potential for a future credit rating upgrade. The agency affirmed Moody's Long-Term Issuer Default Rating (IDR) at 'BBB+' and its Short-Term IDR at 'F1'.
Key Drivers for the Outlook Change
Fitch attributed the revision to Moody's strong market leadership, increased operational scale, and sustained growth in free cash flow. The ratings agency highlighted the company's successful diversification strategy as a key credit support.
The Moody's Analytics division, which provides recurring revenue streams, has become a significant contributor to the company's financial stability. According to Fitch, this segment now represents more than 40% of Moody's total revenue, providing a buffer against the cyclical nature of the credit ratings business.
Financial Health and Projections
Moody's robust balance sheet underpinned Fitch's decision. The company concluded 2025 with a conservative EBITDA leverage of 1.7x and maintained a strong liquidity position, supported by over $2 billion in cash, an undrawn revolver, and a $1 billion commercial paper program.
AdFitch's rating assumptions project that Moody's will sustain EBITDA margins above 50% in future years and keep EBITDA leverage below 2.0x. The agency expects the company to continue returning capital to shareholders via dividends and buybacks while maintaining these stable credit metrics.
Path to a Potential Upgrade
For investors, the Positive outlook indicates that a rating upgrade is possible in the medium term. Fitch stated that an upgrade could be warranted if Moody's continues its growth while preserving its strong profit margins and free cash flow profile.
The agency's analysis assumes Moody's results for 2026 will align with management's expectations, with revenue growth tapering to lower single digits in 2027 and beyond.
