Background

Fitch Ratings has revised its outlook on Moody’s Corporation (NYSE:MCO) to Positive from Stable, signaling a potential future credit rating upgrade for the financial services giant. The agency affirmed Moody's Long-Term Issuer Default Rating (IDR) at 'BBB+' and its Short-Term IDR at 'F1'.

Rationale for the Revision

According to Fitch, the outlook change is underpinned by Moody's robust financial health and dominant market position as a leading global credit rating agency. The rating agency highlighted the company's increased scale, consistent financial policies, and sustained growth in free cash flow.

Moody's strong balance sheet was a key factor, ending 2025 with EBITDA leverage at a conservative 1.7x. The company's liquidity position is also solid, supported by more than $2 billion of cash, an undrawn revolving credit facility, and a $1 billion commercial paper program.

Diversification and Profitability

The revision also reflects the success of Moody's strategic diversification beyond traditional credit ratings. The Moody’s Analytics division now provides a substantial stream of recurring revenue, accounting for more than 40% of the company's total revenue.

Fitch noted that Moody's business model is highly profitable and cash-generative. Both the ratings and analytics segments benefit from low capital intensity and strong operating leverage, contributing to a resilient credit profile.

Future Expectations

An upgrade to Moody's rating could occur if the company continues its growth trajectory while preserving its strong margin and free cash flow profile, Fitch stated. The agency's base case assumptions for Moody's include:

  • 2026 results in line with management's guidance.
  • Revenue growth tapering to the low single digits in 2027 and beyond.
  • EBITDA margins sustained above 50% in future years.
  • EBITDA leverage remaining below 2.0x.

Fitch expects Moody's will continue to return significant capital to shareholders through dividends and share buybacks while maintaining these stable credit metrics.
