Background

An advisory panel to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration is continuing its review of several unapproved peptide compounds on Friday, following a recommendation the previous day to permit compounding pharmacies to produce four similar substances.

Panel Recommendations Clash with FDA Staff

During a nearly 12-hour meeting on Thursday, the panel of outside advisers voted in favor of allowing four unapproved peptides to be made by compounding pharmacies. This recommendation came despite arguments from FDA staff who cited limited evidence of the drugs' safety and efficacy.

The source material noted that several panel members have connections to the peptide industry. On Friday, the committee is scheduled to review and vote on three additional peptides:

  • Emideltide
  • Semax
  • Epitalon

Market and Industry Context

Peptides are drugs constructed from amino acids, the same building blocks the body uses to create proteins. Unapproved versions are currently sold through unregulated online channels in a gray market, promoted for uses ranging from muscle recovery to longevity.

The panel's decision is seen as a victory for proponents of wider access, including wellness influencers and so-called biohacker communities. The recommendations also align with the publicly stated support for these substances by Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. If adopted, the move could shift a portion of the peptide supply from unregulated online sellers to licensed compounding pharmacies.
