Deutsche Bank Upgrades AstraZeneca to Hold After Camizestrant Fails Key Breast Cancer Trial

Deutsche Bank has upgraded its rating on AstraZeneca to 'Hold' from 'Sell' following disappointing results from a pivotal Phase III trial for the company's experimental breast cancer drug, camizestrant. The bank's analyst noted the stock's recent underperformance has created a more balanced risk-reward profile for the pharmaceutical giant.
Rating and Price Target
In a note to clients on Tuesday, Deutsche Bank analyst Emmanuel Papadakis raised the price target on AstraZeneca shares to £11,700 from a previous £11,500. The upgrade follows a period of stock underperformance since the bank initiated its 'Sell' rating nearly a year ago.
According to the note, AstraZeneca's shares have trailed their European large-cap pharmaceutical peers by about 10% on a currency-adjusted basis during that time. Papadakis suggested this performance reflects risks, including the trial outcome, that have now largely been priced into the stock, justifying the more neutral stance.
SERENA4 Trial Setback
The ratings change was prompted by the outcome of the SERENA4 Phase III trial. The study was evaluating Etcamah (camizestrant) combined with the CDK4/6 inhibitor palbociclib as a first-line treatment for patients with estrogen receptor-positive, HER2-negative advanced breast cancer.
AdAstraZeneca reported that while the combination showed a numerical improvement in progression-free survival, the primary endpoint of the trial, the result failed to reach statistical significance. This outcome is a setback for the drug's potential expansion into this specific treatment setting.
Broader Pipeline Context
Despite this trial failure, Etcamah already holds regulatory approvals in the United States, European Union, and Japan for patients with specific ESR1 mutations, based on data from a separate trial. The drug is also being evaluated in other late-stage studies for early-stage breast cancer.
Separately, AstraZeneca continues to see success in other parts of its oncology portfolio. The company recently presented updated data from its ADAURA Phase III trial showing its lung cancer drug, Tagrisso, reduced the risk of death by 47% compared to a placebo in certain patients following tumor resection.
