Comcast Stock Slides 7% as CFO Warns of 'Irrational' Fiber Pricing, Persistent Subscriber Losses

Comcast Corporation (NASDAQ: CMCSA) shares dropped 7% on Wednesday after the company’s finance chief warned of persistent challenges in its core broadband business, driven by aggressive competition from fiber-optic rivals. The comments, made at a Goldman Sachs conference, also triggered a broader sector sell-off, with peer Charter Communications (NASDAQ: CHTR) falling 5%.
Competitive Pressures Mount
Speaking at the Goldman Sachs Communacopia + Technology Conference, Comcast Chief Financial Officer Jason Armstrong described the current pricing environment for fiber broadband as "irrational." He stated that the company expects no improvement in its third-quarter broadband subscriber losses compared to the prior year.
Despite the pressure on subscriber numbers, Armstrong noted that Comcast still anticipates a "modest" improvement in its third-quarter EBITDA trajectory. The company is grappling with intense competition from fiber network providers that are deploying aggressive pricing strategies to win customers.
Analyst Lowers Expectations
AdAnalysts are watching the subscriber trends closely. KeyBanc analyst Brandon Nispel warned of downside risks, noting that competitors offering gigabit speeds for $30 to $40 per month will likely prevent any year-over-year improvement in Comcast’s broadband net additions.
The consensus estimate currently projects 89,000 domestic residential net subscriber losses for the third quarter. However, KeyBanc forecasts a more significant decline, projecting 125,000 subscriber losses for the period. Nispel suggested that an accelerating loss trajectory could force Comcast to cut its Average Revenue Per User (ARPU) to stabilize its customer base.
Industry-Wide Headwinds
The fierce competition heavily pressures traditional cable operators but could benefit telecommunications companies adding fiber subscribers. However, the aggressive pricing environment is creating challenges across the industry, with major telecom players like AT&T also recently acknowledging similar constraints on fiber ARPU.
