Citi Forecasts USD/JPY Could Reach 163 if Topix Index Hits 4,500

The U.S. dollar could climb to ¥163 against the Japanese yen if Japan's Topix stock index rallies to the 4,500 level, according to a research note from Citi released Thursday. The bank's analysis highlights the strong, though evolving, relationship between Japanese equity performance and the currency's depreciation.
Forecast Links Equities and Currency
Citi's current model, based on the Topix index's present value, estimates the USD/JPY exchange rate should be around ¥160 per dollar. The firm's projection suggests a further substantial rise in the broad-based equity index would exert additional downward pressure on the yen.
The bank noted that historically high levels for Japanese stocks have often prompted portfolio rebalancing and hedging activities from both domestic and international investors. These financial flows have likely served to amplify the yen's weakness.
Evolving Dynamics and Market Risks
AdHowever, Citi cautioned that the strong historical correlation between a rising stock market and a falling yen has loosened since 2024. This shift is attributed to two primary factors:
- The contraction in the monetary policy gap between Japan and other major economies.
- Direct foreign exchange intervention by Japanese authorities to support the yen.
The note suggests the current USD/JPY rate has already priced in some of the ongoing strength in Japanese equities. Citi warned that a change to the interest rate spread or a shift in the Japanese government's intervention policy could pose a risk of further yen weakness, and recommended continued caution regarding the currency pair.
