Citi Forecasts USD/JPY at 163 if Japan's Topix Index Reaches 4,500

The USD/JPY exchange rate could climb to approximately ¥163 if Japan’s broad Topix stock index rises to the 4,500 level, according to a research note from Citi released on Thursday. The investment bank's model currently estimates a fair value for the currency pair at around ¥160 based on the index's present level.
Equity Strength and Yen Depreciation
Citi analysts attribute the potential for further yen weakness to investor behavior during periods of high equity performance. Historically, strong gains in Japanese stocks have prompted portfolio rebalancing and hedging activities from both domestic and international investors.
These capital flows, according to the bank, have often amplified the depreciation of the Japanese yen. The Topix index is a capitalization-weighted index that tracks all domestic companies listed on the Prime Market section of the Tokyo Stock Exchange, serving as a key benchmark for the country's equity market.
Weakening Correlation and Key Risks
AdHowever, Citi noted that the strong positive correlation between a rising Topix and a weaker yen has loosened since 2024. The bank identified two primary factors for this shift:
- The narrowing gap in monetary policy between the U.S. and Japan.
- Direct foreign exchange intervention by Japanese authorities to support the yen.
Despite this, Citi warned that the current USD/JPY rate already factors in some of the ongoing strength in Japanese equities. The firm highlighted that potential changes to the interest rate spread or a shift in Japan's official intervention policy remain significant risks that could drive further yen weakness. In light of these variables, the bank recommended that investors maintain a cautious stance on the currency pair.
