China's Domestic AI Stocks Post Triple-Digit Gains on Sovereign Tech Push

Background

Chinese stocks across the artificial intelligence supply chain have posted triple-digit gains over the past year, fueled by an aggressive national push to develop a self-sufficient technology ecosystem from semiconductors to cloud platforms. The market rally reflects investor expectations of a multi-year, state-supported buildout of domestic AI capabilities.

The Domestic A-Share Landscape

The surge is most pronounced in China's domestic A-share market, where companies involved in AI infrastructure and hardware have seen their valuations soar. According to a report from Investing.com, these firms are seen as direct beneficiaries of increased spending and policies aimed at reducing reliance on foreign technology.

Key performers over the past year include:

  • Shandong Zhongji Electrical (300308): An AI infrastructure provider, up +476%.
  • Eoptolink Tech (300502): A maker of optical transceivers for data centers, up +300%.
  • Cambricon Technologies (688256): A specialized AI chip designer, up +212%.
  • Foxconn Industrial Internet (601138): A major manufacturer of AI servers, up +137%.

Other notable gainers include Hygon Info Tech (688041) and NAURA Technology (002371), which are positioned to fill gaps created by U.S. export controls on advanced semiconductors and equipment.

US-Listed Giants and Emerging Players

In contrast to the domestic rally, US-listed Alibaba Group (BABA) has declined 25.3% year-to-date. However, the company remains a central player in China's AI ambitions. Its Qwen large language model was recently approved to power Apple Intelligence services in China, a major distribution win. Citing this potential, Barclays maintains an Overweight rating on the stock with a $195 price target.

The market has also been energized by speculative interest in emerging AI pure-plays. A rumor on July 15, 2026, that startup DeepSeek was pursuing an IPO at a $71 billion valuation reportedly lifted shares of recently-listed peers like Zhipu AI (Z.AI) and MiniMax (0100).

Outlook: Valuations vs. State Support

The investment outlook is shaped by the tension between strong fundamentals and elevated risk. The bull case rests on China's commitment to building a sovereign AI supply chain with massive state backing, a trend accelerated by U.S. export restrictions. Planned formal AI talks between the U.S. and China in September 2026 also suggest a potential easing of geopolitical friction.

However, the bear case points to extremely high valuations, with companies like Cambricon trading at a P/E ratio of 278x. These multiples price in years of flawless execution and leave little room for error. Persistent geopolitical risk also remains a significant headwind, particularly for US-listed entities sensitive to shifts in investor sentiment.
