Bombardier Stock Sell-Off Unwarranted, Presents Buying Opportunity, BMO Says

BMO Capital Markets sees a recent decline in Bombardier's shares as a buying opportunity, asserting that the sell-off has been excessive. The brokerage maintained its Outperform rating and a C$375 price target on the Canadian business-jet manufacturer, implying a potential 23% total return from its closing price of C$304.30 on September 3.
Analyst's Rationale
According to BMO, the stock's recent weakness stems from market concerns over potential tariffs and supply-chain disruptions. However, the investment bank argues that these fears are overblown, stating that demand for Bombardier's aircraft remains robust and its 2026 financial outlook is intact.
The brokerage's analysis suggests several key factors support its positive view:
- Resilient Demand: The order pipeline and demand activity are tracking in line with or ahead of BMO's expectations.
- Minimal Tariff Impact: BMO anticipates no meaningful impact from tariffs and expects the aerospace sector to remain exempt even amid escalating trade tensions between Canada and the U.S.
- Supply-Chain De-risking: The planned acquisition of MHI Canada Aerospace, a key wing supplier, is expected to reduce supply-chain risks and potentially generate cost savings as production ramps up.
AdFinancial Outlook and Shareholder Value
BMO Capital Markets expressed confidence in its third-quarter and full-year 2026 estimates for Bombardier, which include a forecast of C$1.4 billion in free cash flow. The firm noted that neither rising interest rates nor tariff discussions have shown a discernible negative effect on customer demand.
Looking ahead, BMO anticipates that Bombardier is on track to meet its leverage targets by the end of the year. This could pave the way for shareholder distributions to begin as early as 2027. The brokerage also highlighted that strong cash generation will allow the company to continue investing in high-growth areas such as aftermarket services and defense.
