Blackstone, Donerail Reportedly in Final Bidding for Yacht Retailer MarineMax

Investment firms Blackstone and Donerail are among the final bidders vying to acquire recreational yacht retailer MarineMax, according to two people familiar with the matter. The development indicates a potential culmination of a sale process that began after the company faced pressure from activist investors.
The Bidding Process
Private equity firm Centerbridge is also reportedly in the final round of bidding for the Clearwater, Florida-based company, the sources said. MarineMax, which has a market capitalization of approximately $725 million, has been formally soliciting buyer interest since April.
The process follows an all-cash offer submitted by Donerail in February that valued MarineMax at around $1 billion, according to a previous Reuters report. Sources indicate that Donerail subsequently increased its offer, attracting other buyout firms like Blackstone into the formal auction. Representatives for MarineMax, Blackstone, and Donerail declined to comment on the matter.
Background on Activist Pressure
The potential sale follows a campaign by activist investors urging the company to evaluate its strategic alternatives. Donerail began pushing MarineMax last year to either sell itself or replace its chief executive officer. This intensified pressure that began in 2024 when Levin Capital also urged the board to explore a sale.
AdWhile MarineMax has made some changes, including replacing board directors, it has not publicly acknowledged that it is running a sales process. The company operates a network of 65 marinas and storage locations and 70 dealerships, primarily in the United States, catering to a high-end clientele.
Market Context
The interest in MarineMax comes amid a surge in dealmaking within the marina and superyacht services sector over the last 18 months, with private equity and infrastructure funds being particularly active. Blackstone's infrastructure arm previously acquired Safe Harbor Marinas in 2025 for $5.7 billion, while infrastructure investor Stonepeak bought Southern Marinas in April. This trend highlights the sector's appeal as a stable, cash-generating asset class.
Shares of MarineMax (NYSE: HZO) were trading around $33.30 on Friday, marking a year-to-date gain of about 37%. However, the stock remains at roughly half of its all-time high reached in May 2021.
