Background

Large-scale Bitcoin investors, often called “whales,” have significantly increased their holdings over the past 60 days, accumulating an estimated $2.75 billion worth of the cryptocurrency. This renewed buying pressure from well-capitalized players offers a potential signal that the market, which has been in a slump for months, may be approaching a bottom.

Whale Buying and Demand Metrics Improve

Data from analytics firm CryptoQuant shows that large holders, excluding exchanges and mining pools, have added approximately 43,000 BTC to their wallets in the last two months. These investors reportedly re-entered the market as Bitcoin’s price fell near the $60,000 level, ending a multi-month period of reducing their positions.

Further analysis from research firm Glassnode corroborates this trend, indicating that mid-sized holders (100 to 1,000 BTC) and the largest “humpback” whales (over 10,000 BTC) have been actively accumulating. According to Glassnode analyst Sean Rose, all cohorts of holders have shown a clear pattern of re-accumulation since late July.

Adding to the potentially bullish sentiment, a key indicator of spot demand is on the verge of turning positive for the first time since February. CryptoQuant reported that its 30-day apparent spot demand metric has recovered from a low of -206,000 BTC on July 23 to approximately -5,000 BTC. Historically, when this metric has shifted from negative to positive, Bitcoin has seen an average price increase of about 18% over the following 60 days.

A Market Missing Its Marginal Buyer

The renewed interest from whales comes as the market grapples with significant headwinds. Bitcoin has fallen sharply from its recent highs, and crypto-focused ETFs have experienced billions of dollars in outflows. This downturn has also seen one of the market's most prominent buyers, MicroStrategy (MSTR), turn into a seller.

For years, MicroStrategy was a key marginal buyer, but the sustained price decline has impacted its strategy of issuing debt and equity to fund BTC purchases. The company has not acquired any Bitcoin since mid-June. Over the past five weeks, MicroStrategy has sold approximately $213.3 million in Bitcoin to create a cash buffer for interest payments and buybacks, according to the report.

This has left a void in the market, with investors looking for a new major buyer to step in. While crypto ETFs collectively hold more Bitcoin than MicroStrategy, they have seen net outflows for the year. Last week, U.S. Bitcoin ETFs recorded their largest single-week net outflow since the end of June.

Analysts Urge Caution

Despite the positive signs from whale accumulation, analysts advise that a broader market recovery is not guaranteed. Dessislava Ianeva, a research analyst at Nexo, noted that market participation and conviction remain low, with August spot trading volumes at multi-year lows. She stated that while whale buying confirms “structural accumulation,” it does not ensure an immediate, widespread bull market.

For a full recovery, a more favorable macroeconomic environment is likely necessary. “The market is in a kind of numb state,” said Pratik Kala, a portfolio manager at Apollo Crypto. “Without a new catalyst, this sluggishness is expected to continue.”
