Bitcoin Edges Above $82,000 as Bond Rally Eases Hot Inflation Fears

Bitcoin rose modestly on Thursday, climbing back above the $82,000 level as a rally in the U.S. bond market appeared to outweigh concerns from a hotter-than-expected inflation report. The world's largest cryptocurrency was trading up approximately 0.5% to $82,080.5, finding support as falling Treasury yields bolstered investor appetite for risk assets.
Producer Prices Surge in September
Earlier in the day, new data pointed to persistent inflationary pressures in the U.S. economy. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that the headline producer price index (PPI) jumped 1.3% month-over-month in September, significantly outpacing economists' expectations for a 0.3% rise. This marked the largest monthly increase in four and a half years.
Key inflation figures from the report include:
- Year-over-year headline PPI climbed 6.3%, accelerating from August's 5.6% reading and beating the 5.3% consensus estimate.
- Core PPI, which excludes volatile food and energy costs, rose 0.7% month-over-month and 5.0% year-over-year, both well above forecasts.
Typically, high inflation data supports a more restrictive monetary policy from the central bank, an environment that tends to weigh on speculative assets like cryptocurrencies. The report followed similarly strong consumer price index (CPI) data from the previous day.
AdBond Rally Lifts Market Sentiment
Despite the strong inflation numbers, risk assets found relief as U.S. Treasury yields fell sharply. The benchmark 10-year Treasury yield slumped 12.8 basis points to close at 5.061%, while the rate-sensitive 2-year yield slid 4.5 basis points to 4.757%.
A decline in government bond yields can make riskier investments, including crypto, appear more attractive to investors. The move in bonds provided a tailwind for digital assets, helping to offset the potentially negative implications of the PPI report.
Broader Crypto Market Follows Suit
Most major altcoins tracked Bitcoin's modest gains. Ether, the second-largest cryptocurrency, climbed 1.7% to $2,461.72. Other tokens including XRP, BNB, and Solana also posted slight increases, indicating a broad, if cautious, improvement in market sentiment.
