Brent Crude Reverses Sharply, Tests Critical $109 Support Zone

Brent crude oil prices have experienced a significant mean-reversion sell-off after reaching a parabolic top at $117.45. The international benchmark is now testing a critical technical support zone as momentum indicators signal a bearish shift in short-term market sentiment.
A Shift in Momentum
The reversal from the peak was preceded by a bearish engulfing candlestick pattern on October 23, a technical signal often indicating a potential trend change. Following this, prices have declined to test the bottom of the Ichimoku cloud support, a key indicator for traders, around the $109.90 mark.
Technical analysis shows multiple indicators confirming the downward momentum. A close on the 5-hour chart below the 20-period simple moving average (SMA) suggests a short-term trend reversal, while elevated volume on recent down moves indicates conviction among sellers.
Key Bearish Indicators
Several momentum oscillators are reinforcing the negative outlook for Brent crude in the near term:
Ad- MACD: The Moving Average Convergence Divergence indicator has posted a bearish crossover, with the MACD line at 1.08 crossing below its signal line at 1.57.
- RSI: The Relative Strength Index has fallen to 46.22, dropping below the 50 centerline, which suggests that sellers have gained control of momentum.
- Divergence: A bearish divergence was also noted on the MACD histogram at the $117.45 price peak, often a leading indicator of a potential downturn.
Support Levels in Focus
Despite the bearish pressure, the price is holding at a significant technical juncture. The current level around $109.89 represents the bottom of the Ichimoku cloud (Senkou Span B), which could act as a floor for the sell-off. Just below this lies a major support confluence near $108.93, which includes the 38.2% Fibonacci retracement level of the recent uptrend.
A decisive break below this area could open the door for further declines toward the 50% Fibonacci retracement at $106.29 or the long-term 200-period SMA, currently located at $102.83. Conversely, if bulls defend this support, a bounce toward resistance near $111.70 could materialize.
