Gold Price Breaks Below $4,000 as Bearish Technical Trend Intensifies

Gold prices have fallen below the critical $4,000 per ounce psychological threshold as a strong bearish trend continues to dominate the market, according to a technical analysis published by Investing.com on Monday.
The precious metal is now trading within a descending channel pattern, signaling sustained downward pressure and highlighting the primary risk of further trend continuation for investors.
Bearish Trend Dominates
Several key technical indicators reinforce the bearish outlook for gold. The price is trading below its 20-day, 50-day, and 200-day simple moving averages (SMAs), which are in a bearish alignment and now represent heavy overhead resistance, according to the analysis.
Specifically, the 20-day SMA sits at $4,081.97 and the SuperTrend indicator is in a "Down" state at $4,097.33, forming a significant resistance zone around $4,100. The Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD) indicator also shows that downward momentum is accelerating.
Oversold Conditions Signal Potential Bounce
AdDespite the dominant downtrend, some indicators suggest the sell-off may be overextended in the short term, potentially setting the stage for a relief rally. The Relative Strength Index (RSI) has dipped to 29.75, a level considered to be in "oversold" territory.
An RSI reading below 30 often indicates that an asset may be due for a rebound. This is supported by the Money Flow Index (MFI), which at 16.65 is considered deeply oversold, signaling that selling pressure could be nearing exhaustion. A "Hammer" candlestick pattern formed on Oct. 23 near the recent low of $3,989.10, further suggesting potential indecision among traders.
Key Levels to Watch
Based on the technical report, market participants are closely monitoring several critical price levels that could determine gold's next directional move.
- Immediate Support: The recent swing low at $3,989.10 serves as the first line of defense for bulls.
- Bearish Targets: A sustained break below this support could open the door to lower targets, including a Fibonacci extension level at $3,950 and the psychological $3,900 mark.
- Key Resistance: On the upside, a significant confluence of resistance is located in the $4,080-$4,100 zone, which includes the 20-day SMA and the SuperTrend indicator.
