Background

Silver has entered a steep downtrend, with prices on October 26 trading around $53.91 after breaking below all major moving averages. The precious metal is caught between a dominant bearish momentum and growing signs of seller exhaustion, creating a tense environment for investors.

Dominant Downtrend

The technical picture for silver remains decidedly bearish, according to an analysis by Investing.com. The price is trading well below its 20, 50, and 200-day Simple Moving Averages (SMAs), a formation that typically signals a strong and established downtrend.

Further reinforcing this outlook, the price is moving within a descending channel pattern. Key momentum indicators also point to continued weakness:

  • The SuperTrend indicator, a popular trend-following tool, shows a bearish signal with dynamic resistance at $56.04.
  • The Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD) indicator remains in bearish territory, suggesting downward momentum persists.

Despite the strong downtrend, several indicators suggest the recent sell-off may be overextended. A Doji candlestick pattern formed at the recent lows on October 26, signaling indecision among traders and a potential pause or reversal in the trend.

Technical oscillators are also in extreme territory. The Relative Strength Index (RSI) has fallen to 26.92, well into oversold territory below the 30-mark. Similarly, the Money Flow Index (MFI) registered an extremely low reading of 9.07, indicating significant selling pressure that may not be sustainable. The price is also trading near its lower Bollinger Band, which can sometimes precede a price bounce.

Key Levels to Watch

For market participants, the immediate level of support to watch is the recent swing low at $53.07. A confirmed break below this level could open the door for further losses, with a 127.2% Fibonacci extension target pointing toward $48.16.

On the upside, any recovery would first need to overcome a confluence of resistance between $55.75 (the 20-day SMA) and $56.05. A decisive move above this zone would be required to challenge the bearish trend and could signal a more significant mean-reversion rally.
