Baltic Dry Index Hits Over Two-Week Low on Weaker Capesize, Panamax Rates

Summary
The main sea freight index for dry bulk commodities fell to its lowest point since late July, as declining rates for larger Capesize and Panamax vessels overshadowed gains in smaller ship segments.
The Baltic Exchange's main dry bulk sea freight index fell on Tuesday, snapping a two-day winning streak to reach its lowest level in more than two weeks, pressured by declining rates for larger vessel classes.
The overall index, which tracks freight rates for Capesize, Panamax, and Supramax vessels, dropped 63 points, or 2.2%, to 2,815, a level not seen since July 31, according to exchange data.
Segment Performance
The decline was led by the larger vessel segments, which are key proxies for iron ore and coal demand.
- The Capesize index, which tracks ships that typically transport 150,000-tonne cargoes like iron ore and coal, lost 138 points, or 3%, falling to 4,452. This marked its lowest point since July 31. Average daily earnings for Capesize vessels decreased by $1,250 to $36,872.
- The Panamax index, for ships usually carrying 60,000 to 70,000 tonnes of coal or grain, fell 51 points, or 2.3%, to 2,155, its lowest since August 3. Average daily earnings for these ships declined by $462 to $19,391.
AdWhile the index for smaller Supramax vessels posted gains, it was insufficient to offset the weakness in the larger ship categories.
Market Context
The Baltic Dry Index is a key barometer for global economic health, as it reflects the demand for shipping raw materials. The downturn in Capesize and Panamax rates suggests softening demand for key industrial commodities.
In a related market, iron ore futures saw an uptick. This was reportedly driven by market expectations of further economic stimulus from China following the release of weak economic data, which helped to counteract concerns over slowing industrial activity and lower steel production in the country.
