Vossloh Q2 Profit Declines on Higher Costs and Weak Organic Sales

Vossloh AG confirmed its second-quarter 2026 results, revealing a significant drop in profitability despite a headline revenue increase driven by a recent acquisition. The German rail technology company's operating profit fell as higher costs and a decline in organic sales weighed on its performance.
Profitability Under Pressure
The company's operating profit for the second quarter fell 14% year-over-year to €32 million. This resulted in a notable compression of its operating margin, which declined to 8.1% from 11.3% in the same period last year. Vossloh attributed the margin pressure to higher material costs and softer fixed cost absorption stemming from lower production volumes.
Earnings per share (EPS) saw a sharper decline, falling 43% to €0.72. The challenging quarter also saw the company's free cash flow remain negative, worsening slightly to negative €9 million from negative €6.9 million in the prior-year period. However, operating cash flow improved to €10 million.
Revenue Growth Masks Organic Weakness
Vossloh reported a 19% increase in quarterly revenue to €396 million, but this growth was entirely due to the contribution from its Sateba acquisition. The company stated that organic sales experienced a slight decline, citing weak call-offs from existing framework agreements and cautious overall demand.
AdPerformance varied significantly across its business segments:
- Core Components: Sales surged 61% to €187 million, boosted by the Sateba acquisition, but its operating margin fell to 10.3% from 12.7%.
- Customized Modules: Revenue dipped 2% to €164 million, while operating profit fell 33% against difficult prior-year comparisons.
- Lifecycle Solutions: Sales in the maintenance segment declined 8% to €54 million, making it the weakest performer.
Record Orders Point to Future Demand
Despite the weak operational results, Vossloh reported strong future business indicators. Order intake for the quarter rose 44% year-over-year to €408 million, representing a robust organic growth rate of 28%. This pushed the company's order backlog to a record €1,140 million, a 32% increase from the prior year, signaling healthy long-term demand for its products and services.
