Volkswagen to Export China-Developed Technology in Global Strategy Shift

Volkswagen is shifting its strategy to export technology developed in its Chinese operations to global markets, a move designed to leverage the region as an innovation hub and bolster the automaker's global competitiveness. The German company announced it will deploy a new China-developed vehicle platform in emerging markets, starting with South America by the end of the decade.
Strategic Pivot to 'In China, For the World'
Volkswagen announced on Wednesday that its Compact Main Platform with the China Electronic Architecture, developed in partnership with Chinese firms, will underpin its next-generation models targeting markets in the Global South. This marks a significant departure from the automaker's prior "In China, for China" localization strategy.
"China is a key innovation engine for the Volkswagen Group — and increasingly a product and tech hub for our global markets," Volkswagen Group CEO Oliver Blume said in a statement. The move signals an intent to transform VW's China operations from a regional sales driver into a cost-efficient development and export base.
Competitive Pressures Drive New Approach
The strategic change comes as Volkswagen faces dwindling market share in China, where it has struggled against domestic electric vehicle manufacturers like BYD and Geely on technology, software, and price. The German auto giant is undergoing its largest restructuring in decades to adapt to these market realities.
AdThis trend is not unique to Volkswagen. Other legacy automakers, including General Motors and Renault, are increasingly adopting similar strategies to globalize technologies developed within their Chinese joint ventures as they compete with Chinese brands in international markets.
Future Plans and Technology Rollout
As part of the new strategy, Volkswagen plans to increase exports of China-built Volkswagen and Jetta brand vehicles to South America and Africa. The company has ruled out exporting these specific models to Europe and North America for now.
Volkswagen also unveiled its VEGA technology package, which is slated for a 2027 launch. According to the company, the package will feature key technologies including:
- 850-volt fast-charging capability
- Readiness for Level 3 autonomous driving
