UBS Lifts USD/SGD Forecast on Hawkish Fed, MAS Policy Tightening
Text size
Background

UBS has revised its price targets for the U.S. dollar against the Singapore dollar (USD/SGD) higher, attributing the adjustment to a hawkish Federal Reserve and a recent monetary policy tightening by the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS).

Revised Forecasts

The financial services firm raised its forecasts across its projection horizon. The updated price targets for USD/SGD are as follows:

  • September 2026: 1.28 (previously 1.26)
  • December 2026: 1.28 (previously 1.25)
  • March 2027: 1.27 (previously 1.25)
  • June 2027: 1.26 (previously 1.24)

Dual Policy Drivers

According to UBS, the revision reflects two key central bank actions. The firm expects U.S. dollar strength to persist in the near term as the Federal Reserve maintains its hawkish monetary policy stance.

Additionally, the MAS tightened its policy in July by slightly increasing the pace of appreciation for the Singapore dollar's nominal effective exchange rate (SGD NEER). However, UBS noted that the positive impact on the Singapore dollar was modest, as the currency was already trading near the strong end of its policy band.

Investor Implications

For investors holding U.S. dollars, UBS suggested the Singapore dollar remains a viable option for currency diversification, citing its stability and policy-driven appreciation trend.

For those with Singapore dollars, the firm noted a preference for strategies such as selling the downside price risk in the Australian dollar/Singapore dollar (AUD/SGD) pair at a level of 0.895 or below to enhance yield.
