Background

Toyota announced Thursday the opening of its new Toyota Battery Center of North America, a key facility designed to centralize and accelerate its battery development for the U.S. market. The move signals the automaker's commitment to localizing its electric vehicle supply chain and tailoring battery technology for regional needs.

A Strategic Hub for Regional Production

The 30,000-square-foot facility, located in Saline, Michigan, will serve as a hub for the entire battery development lifecycle, from evaluating raw materials to testing finished packs and developing recycling processes. Its primary role is to support Toyota's expanding North American manufacturing footprint.

Critically, the center will work in close partnership with Toyota Battery Manufacturing in North Carolina and other vehicle assembly plants across the continent. This integration is expected to streamline development and improve quality control for batteries used in a wide range of Toyota vehicles.

Advancing a 'Multi-Pathway' Strategy

The new center will support Toyota's broad-based approach to electrification, which includes multiple powertrain technologies. Engineers at the Saline facility will be tasked with developing and assessing batteries for:

"Toyota has long been at the forefront of battery development," said Keita Moritsu, Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer at Toyota Motor North America R&D. "This center is where that leadership expands to North America — and where we’re building its next chapter."

Market and Customer Implications

For investors, the facility represents a tangible step in de-risking Toyota's North American EV production by bringing crucial R&D capabilities closer to its manufacturing base. For customers, the company states the center will lead to more durable and reliable products.

"This facility means Toyota engineers can detect and resolve field concerns faster and closer to the source," said Jordan Choby, Group Vice President of Powertrain. Choby added that it will enable the development of "longer-lasting batteries designed to perform in the conditions American drivers face every day." Toyota also noted it will provide research access to the University of Michigan Electric Vehicle Center, fostering further innovation in the region.
