Three AI-Powered Stock Strategies Outpace S&P 500 in Early September

Three investment strategies guided by artificial intelligence have delivered returns significantly outpacing the S&P 500 during a volatile start to September. According to a September 11 report from Investing.com, the models, part of its ProPicks AI service, demonstrated strong performance even as the broader market remained nearly flat amid concerns over oil prices and Treasury yields.
Tech-Heavy Portfolios Lead the Pack
The top-performing model, "Tech Titans," generated a 3.92% return between September 1 and September 11, creating a 4.44 percentage point edge over the S&P 500, which fell 0.52% in the same period. The gains were driven by strong performance in semiconductor and software stocks.
Key drivers for the Tech Titans strategy included:
- Intel (INTC): up 12.76% on continued turnaround momentum and a new bullish rating from Piper Sandler.
- AMD (AMD): up 9.57%.
- Oracle (ORCL): up 8.22% following a strong fiscal first-quarter earnings report.
Two other strategies also beat the benchmark. The "Quality Compounders" model rose 2.04%, led by gains in Qualcomm, Marvell, and Arm. A broader strategy, "Beat the S&P 500," was up 1.81%, with significant overlap in semiconductor holdings.
AI Infrastructure Remains a Dominant Theme
AdThe outperformance of these specific AI-selected portfolios underscores a dominant market narrative for the year: sustained investment in AI infrastructure. The report from Investing.com notes that companies involved in chipmaking and cloud computing continue to attract capital, showing resilience while the broader market navigates economic headwinds.
This trend suggests that even in a sideways market, targeted exposure to the AI supply chain has been a source of significant returns. The monthly rebalancing of the AI models allows them to adapt to such prevailing themes.
Mixed Results Across Other Strategies
Not all of the AI-powered strategies had a positive start to the month, highlighting the varied performance of quantitative models. The "Financial Fortresses" strategy, focused on financial stocks, was the primary laggard, declining 2.69% and underperforming its sector benchmark by over two percentage points. The decline was largely attributed to significant drops in holdings like FactSet (-13.92%) and Moody’s (-5.53%).
Investing.com also reported on successful positions closed out during the September 1 rebalance. These included Haemonetics, which returned 88.98% after being held for a year, and Molina Healthcare, which gained 46.35% over a five-month period. As with any investment strategy, past performance is not an indicator of future results.
