Thales Stock Gains After Deutsche Bank Upgrade on Strong Defense Outlook

Summary
Shares in the French aerospace and defense firm rose after Deutsche Bank upgraded its rating to 'Buy,' citing improved visibility and better-than-expected first-half financial results.
Shares of Thales (TCFP) climbed as much as 3.7% on Monday after Deutsche Bank upgraded the French aerospace and defense company to “Buy” from “Hold.” The bank cited a stronger outlook for the defense sector and improved visibility across the group's business segments following a robust first-half earnings report.
Analyst Upgrade
Deutsche Bank raised its price target on Thales stock to €296 from €283, implying a potential upside of 25% from the previous closing price of €236.40. Analyst Christophe Menard noted that uncertainties which led to a previous downgrade in January 2026 have now cleared.
The bank's positive revision is based on several factors, including an improved defense outlook, a faster-than-expected recovery in the Space division, and signs that the Cyber & Digital unit may have hit a trough in the first half. Menard also highlighted Thales's strong technology positioning within the defense industry.
Strong First-Half Performance
The upgrade follows Thales's better-than-expected first-half results, which were driven by strong orders and a sharp increase in cash flow. Key financial highlights include:
Ad- Adjusted EBIT: Rose 9.9% to €1.37 billion, beating analyst consensus estimates by approximately 4%.
- Sales: Grew 6.2% to €5.63 billion.
- Order Intake: Increased 22% on an organic basis, driven by strength in both defense and space.
- Free Cash Flow: Grew roughly fourfold year-over-year to €1.9 billion, aided by a significant working capital swing from downpayments.
Defense sales showed strong momentum with 11.9% organic growth in the second quarter. While the aerospace division reported a 1.4% decline, this was due to a €150 million revenue adjustment from two canceled satellite orders. Excluding this one-off item, aerospace organic growth would have been 11%, according to an analysis by Jefferies.
Company Outlook
Thales reiterated its full-year guidance for 2026, signaling confidence in its performance for the remainder of the year. The company continues to expect organic sales growth of 6% to 7% and an adjusted EBIT margin between 12.6% and 12.8%.
